Sorry, puppy. I had to dash out in response to Snape's distress call. He and Poppy took it upon themselves to confront Minerva and--well, Snape came back to find her drunk and transformed to her cat form.

You remember that time that James transformed when he was already too drunk to stand?

Well. The thing is that a stag's a much larger creature than a cat but neither one was made to process alcohol.

Anyway, he needed me to intervene with the Hominem Reddulio but we all decided someone better stay and keep an eye on her while he and Poppy start work on a potion. I gather it's some tricky business (and not a few of the ingredients were only just brought to us in the solstice run. Seems you're not the only one who corresponded with Aleks separately). They'll be at it for a while.

Oh, and he's got a shopping list. He might turn up at Doughty Conduit around closing time to raid the private stockroom, now that Aleks' latest shipment has been stowed. Myrrh resin and a particular strain of cardamom and - oh, whatever else he was saying. Wasn't really listening. Anyway, I think we have the cardamom but I'm not sure if we realised it was meant for him, so it might actually have made its way to the shelves.

He wants to run some sort of test on it when it gets here. But now that I think about it, I heard Aleks say something about not being able to get the myrrh resin at a decent price and I had no idea what he was on about at the time - turns out it's for Snape. Maybe we can send Ellie out to beg some from another apothecary.

Well. If you've already transformed, you'll not see this until morning, anyway, but I should be home by then and I'll see you when you wake up.

And if you haven't, I'll be home as soon as I can. Perhaps we'll be lucky and you'll skip a month?

Merciful Morgana, he's growling that this is taking too long. ('Stop writing sweet nothings, Black. I need an extra pair of hands.' Hmph. I ought to bring one or two of those new albums back with me tomorrow and torture him while I'm cat-sitting!)
alt_sirius: (beat-up)
All right.

Bea's down for the night.

Kreacher's Merlin knows where.

Let's have it, then. I know, I know, I'm an utter prat. What else?
alt_sirius: (half view)
Well?

You wanted to see it.

Let's have it. I mean, I see I've been a right git, as she says (well, from her side) but what now?

Is it good or bad that no matter what she quotes (and Dora, that's Uriah Heap, that last bit), all I can hear whenever she starts on lyrics is 'Go Ask Alice' - and no, not just because Allie's usually my first line of defence when it comes to girls. Because I wish it had been on one of the albums she'd nicked. Perhaps I'll send her a copy of Lewis Carroll, as well.

alt_sirius: (Shocked)
Did that just happen?

Kingsley, Benjy, Frank - are any of you in the arena watching?

I don't think that was fake like they're saying. I think we just

watched

Oh, Mordred.
alt_sirius: (Shocked)
Bugger all. I've been working on this bloody Grim Truth all day and I'm fucking nowhere.

All I've got is, 'What in Merlin's name is WRONG with you all?' and that's no good.

Maybe Mac's right and these posts are useless. It's not like I can give people a blueprint, 'Here's how to throw off the yoke of oppression' - MLE will simply stop them in their tracks.

And I've had another letter from Justin. Hydra Lestrange is going to get that lad killed if he's not careful.

Can you let Dora close up alone? I need a fresh bottle.
alt_sirius: (Padfoot)
Need you over here, quick as you can.

Leave Bea she'll be all right.

Might be trouble.

Damn. We're not alone. Have to change back - no time.
alt_sirius: (Earnest)
I couldn't help but notice that Miss Parkinson fell ill today. Is she all right?

She didn't mention what made her feel unwell, by chance, did she?

If not ... I think I may know what set her off. In case you need to know in order to help.

And if she did tell you anything ... well, have at. I know it was bound to pour vinegar on the wound but - well, I couldn't see a way round it. And I guess I underestimated her reaction, at that.
alt_sirius: (Okay)
Well, Dora, I suppose I may have to admit that I may be misjudging your cousin Hydra. Or else she's far more insidious than we thought.

I've had an owl from my old student, Justin Finch-Fletchley. He says he's been carefully asking people's opinions about whether I'm really alive or if my post after the Quidditch World Cup was written by an impostor. When he found out that even Hydra Lestrange thinks, possibly, it was real and not a fake, he figured he could chance sending me an owl.

Merlin, he's been saving up a lot to say.

First, I was right: The French government have taken an interest in his mother. Laura's under watch. They still believe our story, that she's a Squib, so no one is expecting her to perform magic. But they made it clear to Justin that his conduct will directly determine whether she's allowed to continue living in their home or whether they're going to seize her property. So he's more than a little worried about that and trying his best to keep up the charade that he was simply born into a family that thought he wouldn't have any magic, rather than one that didn't know magic existed.

Second, he's having some trouble, because of his status, with some of the older boys. Well, we knew that might happen. I warned him he could be in for some hazing. There are two in particular who seem to delight in bullying him. He makes it all sound like it's nothing but he did ask for a few more defensive tips. I'll have to consider how to get those back to him without alerting anyone.

Third. Circe. This is the heart of it all.

He'd just gone on rather a date of sorts with none other than Hydra Lestrange. Dora, he's quite taken with her, I'll have you know. Kissed her. I think it's a first kiss for them both, from what he has to say (though how he'd know about her I couldn't tell you). He makes it all sound very innocent and honestly I can't imagine him behaving anything other than a gentleman, so I believe him about that. What I'm not sure of is that she's all that sweet as he makes her sound. Something about an animal-lover and her pet rabbit and not wanting to take Arithmancy. Well. That part was a little harder to follow. He says she was withdrawn at first but as they got to talking she told him all sorts of things about her mother, how she knows she's a disappointment and how she sometimes does things just because she knows it irritates Bella. Things like not eating meat. She asked him things about living in a country where the muggles are in charge and he told her about films and transportation and clothing and answered some of her questions about lies her mother's told her. She'd taught her that hugging a muggleborn would make her hair fall out!

Well. Anyway, the point is that he clearly fancies her rather a lot. But he's also well aware that he's lying to her about who he is and how much worse it would be for her to actually be dating a muggleborn. (Actually, he's quite pleased about 'defiling' her in Bella's eyes, in those terms, even if it has to be kept a secret. Sort of a vicarious revenge for making him think Bella had actually killed me.) But he does feel a little guilty that he has to deceive Hydra on any level.

Now, the other problem I have and I'm not sure how to tell him, is that he could be the one being deceived. What if Hydra's just drawing him out? I've been worried for him, you know, that he'll give himself away. And we all know what sort of idiots boys are when they're interested in a girl. He might well tell her things he can't cover up or keep consistent later. She could be trying to lull him into a sense of security so that she can report back to Mummy. I want to warn him about that.

But then there's something that worries me even more than his getting close to Hydra. He doesn't say it right out, but I think he's hoping he can learn something about Bella that will help us. I don't want him messing about with that at all. Not only does it put him in terrible danger but it'd put his mother in jeopardy. I don't think he'd do anything deliberately foolish but - he knows Bella's a Legilimens, too. Another reason to go careful.

I shouldn't answer, I know. It's for his own good if I don't send him anything potentially incriminating. But I don't want him running away with the notion that since he's in England, he can act as some sort of spy.

Especially if it's Hydra who's really the spy, and not Justin.
alt_sirius: (Padfoot)
Er.

Look, I ... think we'll be better off if you and Dora have some of that 'alone time' we talked about, yeah?

Besides, if we're going to get anyone out at the Solstice, someone's got to be running the countryside and helping out. The Players can only do so much.

So.

I'm checking in on John and Lucinda, all right?

And I'm not cross. If you're not. I just .... You and Dora just need me to not be cramping you so much, that's all.
alt_sirius: (Contemplative)
Hermione, if you're going to be near him at all, could you let me know if he seems all right to yoiu? I don't like them bringing him over here one bit. I suppose if they'd had any proof that his mother's not really a Squib or that they knew me at all, they'd be sure to show him a different sort of hospitality than the Malfoys' pilfered castles. Still.

He doesn't sound quite himself, either, at least not in the replies he's giving to people on his introduction post. All that rot about being lucky to be in the Protectorate. I'd love to know what the Ministry's plan is, or what they think they've got in him.

Or what they've told him to do and say while he's here.

I'd love to tell him I'm alive, too, but best not. Not until we know what's going on.
alt_sirius: (OhHellNo)
Dora you'd best get home if you can.

Remus is downstairs with that bloke. You know the one.

I'd do the negotiating but - well. And Bea's fine but I don't know if you've seen, Terry's supposedly making a run for it sometime in the next I dunno how long.

And I know Frank's got it, and Steve, but

Well. I feel bad not being there, is all, if the kid comes through successfully.

More than that, I think Remus is starting to sweat a little too much.

Circe. Where's the polyjuice? I'll look for your hairbrush if you're going to be much longer.
alt_sirius: (Contemplative)
You asked what happened with Terrie and like I said, I've been wanting to tell you - I'm still trying to figure it all out myself.

First, though, tell Dora I'll travel on Tuesday, okay? Lucinda got a message to the witch in Cotgrave - her name is Langworthy - and we're to meet tomorrow.

Well.

I guess the first thing I should do is reassure you that I have not abandoned Terrie. Things are far from resolved but it's not as if I've simply chucked her or anything.

It's funny, though, the things I never thought would matter but do. I think I told you that there's a strong possibility that her child was fathered by her boss. She admitted that much right away, it's part of what's upsetting her. Merlin knows I sympathise - no witch in her right mind would want to make a baby with that bastard - but I can't quite ignore that she knew the risk when she dropped her protections. I certainly can't ignore that she made the decision without my consent, either.

So I guess, under those circumstances, I have to admit that the child's paternity does matter to me. Though not entirely for the reasons she assumed. When I asked if she intended to perform a paternity charm, she turned defensive as anything. Some of her accusations were probably on the mark - as I said, I am somewhat doubtful the child's mine, since it was barely four weeks since I'd seen her when she told me, so the timing was awfully quick if she hadn't been expecting to succeed. And she's right that if Birchmore caught even a whiff of Terrie going to a hedgewitch for a paternity test he'd start by firing her and it'd get worse from there.

The real reason's far more complicated, of course. But that's not important right now. What's important is that she assumed I'd tell her exactly what you assumed I'd tell her; That I don't care who the father is, that I'll stay involved either way, that of course I love her and I'll love the child and - well.

And it's not that I blame her, exactly, for wanting someone to save her from Birchmore's attentions. But it's not as if I can simply acknowledge the child and marry her and send her off to Moddey. She's still reticent to work for the Order on a regular basis - doesn't even really want to know more about us, save what she's already guessed and done. She's afraid. Afraid for her mother, afraid to lose what she's already managed to scrape together for herself - and frankly I don't think, deep down, she really wants to leave that life.

As for my other reasons .... It's just. You know, I always said I didn't want kids of my own. I've even been careful to avoid women who already have children or who might want to settle down. Now that I'm confronted with the prospect, I realise - it does matter to me whether the child is a Black. Especially if it's a boy. Isn't that odd?

I just - we can't seem to come to any sort of agreement about it. I know what she wants me to say and do, I know that at least in part she deliberately manipulated the situation so that I would feel obligated to rescue her. And yet she doesn't really want rescue so much as ... legitimacy. Which I don't have to point out to you is the one thing I certainly can't give her in the eyes of the Protectorate.

I told her that I couldn't take responsibility for the child without knowing for sure that I'm the father. She said she might be able to get her mediwitch to test this month - it's her four-month check, so that's the right timing anyway, as you probably know better than I. Until then, we're at an impasse, I suppose.

Well. That's what's happened. Now it's your turn to tell me I'm out of order and then Allie will do and then - I dunno, I suppose I'll live in a cave like a hermit rather than risk this sort of pickle again.
alt_sirius: (Lemme'Splain)
Well, we found him.

Merlin. Hermione, your friend is certainly one stubborn little cuss. He wouldn’t come with us, no matter what Frank and I tried to tell him. Though, to be fair, I think we might have convinced him to go, but we were interrupted.

Let me back up and tell it in the right order.

So, first, last night, Frank and I arranged to ‘borrow’ the cart with Carrow’s food deliveries and Frank got us in with only a mild Confundus. I caught Terry’s scent just about immediately once we came through the gatehouse, and then we saw him walking on the wall. We headed straight up there.

He recognised Padfoot and I’m pleased to say he seemed genuinely happy to see me - but then he got very nervous about seeing Frank. Of course, Frank was polyjuiced. We ducked down behind the wall and I transformed, and introduced him to my companion. Frank reminded him about having met him before - something I’d quite forgotten about - and we added that we’d both been responsible for kicking Carrow’s teeth in last year. At last he visibly relaxed in front of us - and then we noticed what was wrong.

He’d been beaten. Savagely.

We healed him as best we could - my guess is that he had ruptured something internally - and Frank had to rebreak one finger so we could set it properly. I don’t mind telling you it crossed both our minds to go and find Carrow then and there. Must have shown on our faces because Terry immediately told us not to pay Carrow another visit. He also wouldn’t settle until we put some glamours on the wounds to make them look like they were still healing at a normal pace. Frank set them to fade over time and that calmed him down considerably.

He apologised to me - to me! - for not coming with me that day when I tried to rescue him, the day Carrow left the school. He stammered something about Alecto hurting Hermione. I guess they’ve brainwashed him pretty well on that score. Frank and I told him he shouldn’t have worried about that, that we’d never have let them hurt her. Showed a little pluck then, he did, and asked how we’d have managed that.

Well, that gave Frank the opening to give him the portkey - though we also offered that he could come with us right then and there, if he wanted. He shook his head, said Carrow’d already taunted him about some kind of tracking spell. Frank pulled out his wand to check, and the bastard hadn’t been lying. He’s done something to Terry - blood magic, I think, and it keeps tabs on the kid.

We gave him the portkey anyway, told him to hide it, and told him about our friends in Sherwood forest, so he can find them if he needs to do. The tracking spell’s a problem, but Frank and I figure we’ll know if he activates the device and we can make sure that if Carrow follows, he’s never coming back. (I also reminded him that the tracking spell might not hold if he can master the Animagus transformation. After all, changing seemed to break a few enchantments placed on me when Bellatrix was on my tail.)

Well, Terry got a funny look and he showed us a bracelet round his wrist. We hadn’t noticed it until he pointed it out - and that’s after running two checks over him for health and then that charm - but he told us his friends made it for him. (And he looked sidelong at Frank when he said it, Alice; I’m sure he meant to include Neville in that statement, but didn’t want to admit it straight out.) He showed us the bead that conceals where he keeps his wand and said he could get another one to hide the portkey.

‘Sounds like you have some good friends,’ I said.

‘Yeah. The best,’ he told us. Then another one of those sideways looks, this time at me. “I've kept your secrets. And I've kept their secrets. The thing is...some of them are starting to be some of the same secrets.’

While I was still trying to decide what to say to that, Frank asked what he meant. Terry talked about keeping his wand hidden and learning magic and such.

‘But my loyalties to you don’t conflict with my loyalties to them,’ he added.

I gave his shoulder a squeeze and told him no, I didn’t think they did.

I think he was about to say something else, and Frank and I were gearing up to try again to get him to come with us right then and there, but just at that moment we heard Carrow give a massive shout for Terry to come attend him. He transformed in an instant - fear, first, and told us to move, not to get caught - and then somehow he made himself look stupid, vacant and a little dead inside. I guess he’s had to learn how to mask his real cleverness over the years with that murdering son of a bitch.

There wasn’t any point arguing with him, not with Carrow bellowing that he’d have Terry’s head on a platter if he didn’t jump to. I reminded him to keep practising and transformed back to Padfoot. All we could do was complete the delivery and bring back the cart.

Luckily, the pub where we got it has a fully stocked cellar. Frank and I are agreed on the single best way to spend the rest of this afternoon. It’s that or talk our way back into that castle to thump Carrow again, despite what Terry asked us.
alt_sirius: (Shocked)
I've just realised: With all the fuss and bother over Macnair and Snape, Frank and I forgot about taking Tide Turner to meet Aleks. Last communication I had from him he was putting together the shipment and planning to arrive at the drop point in the Channel early this morning.

Bugger.

I'm trying to locate an owl willing to attempt penetrating the wards, to let Aleks know what to do. Too bad the little one I found just when we left Hogwarts is off on another mission. Transfer of goods or no, Aleks still has to pay the captain and now he's got a load of cargo with nowhere to sell it. Buggery.

Moony, it also means Laszlo may run short on some of those delicacies you've been able to supply in the past.

But - for what it's worth, like Frank says, we had the two of them put their memories into the Pensieve today and spent a load of time watching them for all the details. I still don't think Snape's to be trusted any further than necessary but - well, for the moment, I guess he's got information we can use. Certainly can't have him going off on his own and getting caught and giving up what he now knows, that's for sure.

Kingsley took some hair from each of them: Emmeline and Benjy are going to appear, polyjuiced, somewhere in the West Country so that MLE will hare off there. Davidson's agreed to take them in for now.

And I'm off as well. I'll check back with Davidson in a week or two but .... there's something I've been putting off until Harry finished out the school year. So. Got to see to that business as I've let it go too long as it is.

BUGGER BUGGER BUGGER

I knew they'd try something.

Snape and Macnair are on the Hogwarts grounds.

AND SO IS HARRY.

Frank - Kingsley - WHOEVER - Need backup. Fast.

I think we've enough time to get to him before the moon's up.

alt_sirius: (Looking)
S'after midnight.

Happy birthday, Reg.
alt_sirius: (Sad)
Bugger all.

No - before I get into that. I'm okay. Pomona's been seeing to me when she can, and Greenhouse 4, if you remember, has that little potting room off the main chamber, where I can hide during the one or two lessons she has to teach the NEWT students. I think a Gryffindor boy caught a glimpse of me just as I was arriving but I hid quickly enough. I haven't heard any other murmurs about it, and certainly no students have come out looking or approached the greenhouses with any sort of hesitation, so I think I dodged that hex.

It's something else, though. An owl.

Bugger.

Right, no good way to say it, so out with it, then. Fair's fair: You can take the piss all you like, mate, for how I reacted when I found out you'd gone and got my own cousin up the duff. Wand's in the other hand, now, isn't it?

Yeah. It's Terrie. She's

Well.

Bugger.

Look, don't - don't tell anyone else, will you? Not even Allie.

Bugger all. Complicated.
alt_sirius: (Earnest)
Will's taken a turn for the worse.

We couldn't have a fire all yesterday of course, because of MLE all over the village. I cast warming charms on the room but they had to be refreshed every so often. And last night especially with the Dementors patrolling, it got really cold.

I changed form and Frank and me put Will under the blankets with us to keep him warm, but this morning his cough is worse. I know you probably can't come down but - what should we do?
alt_sirius: (SayWhat?)
Morgana and Maeve, Allie.

She's done it again.

That Parkinson girl. She wrote a (really dreadful) poem for my brother. And sent it ... to me.

He's dead, isn't he? Really dead. Forever. And if you're dead then nobody will be left to care about him but me. So I really hope that you aren't. Dead, I mean. Because if you both are, then I don't know what I'd do.

Get used to disappointment? Bloody Baron's bones!

More than anything I want to tell her that she's in for massive disappointment if she keeps on building Reg up like a hero. Like he was trying to steer her one way or another. My brother was a lot of things, Allie, but he never met a conviction he couldn't gainsay.

Merlin. Between this and Moony and Terrie it's a miracle I'm still willing to keep myself in hiding.
alt_sirius: (achy)
Well.

All right, I'll admit that Moony's news wasn't as bad as Frank's. But I still say that 'We need to talk' are the four worst words in the English language. Never anything good after saying that.

And you! I shall have to have a long think about whether to forgive you not giving me better warning.

Do me a favour, though: If she doesn't come 'round to it on her own in a day or so, help us convince Dora she ought to go see Poppy? I don't like her having to lie to the Healers down here.

Merlin. I'm not prepared for this. What if I were to just march up to Crouch and duel him in broad daylight? That'd be easier, I think. And possibly more fun.

Okay, no, I don't mean that. Much.
