Well, even if Bea was the one who played with them most tonight, I do love my presents. Inappropriate, unintentional humour and all.

And look, given how Dora's quest is going with my mother's portrait, buying a new sugar and cream set wasn't all that daft an idea.

So, what are the odds that we'll go more than ten minutes today without Bea reminding us that she's three?

I think the hardest part so far has been keeping her out of the cake. (To say nothing of the incongruity of Kreacher even making a cake. I've checked it for razor blades or rat poison or anything equally malicious.)

When are we expecting the Moddey contingent? I've fielded about a million questions about Kevin, Keisha and Sara already. Who else did Alice plan to bring? (I can't quite explain so she'll believe me that Rory's not really interested in a party for a three-year-old.)

Maureen is coming, isn't she? Because if there are about to be a dozen children under six here we might need to set up a few more safety spells.

How are you doing, then? Not sure whether I should call your attention to the date, or not.

If you've let it pass without realising, don't feel guilty about that. If you're mourning him or wondering if we'll ever know what happened, don't let grief consume you.

He made his choices, just as we've done. Perhaps he'd have changed his path if he had it to do again. But there are things that wouldn't have changed. He wouldn't have come as far as you've come, or as far as Draco's come. He wouldn't have revised his opinions about muggleborns or other races besides wizards. He wouldn't have been inclined to risk himself time and time again for something more important than his own life, or his family or - anything like that. Maybe you don't care about whether he could have been brave, I don't know.

It doesn't make missing him wrong. It doesn't make his death any easier, either. But he'd be the first to remind you not to dishonour that memory by turning him into a hero, when he wasn't.

Anyway. I wanted you to know I'm thinking about him. And if you are, too, that's .... He'd have liked that.

I find it singularly ironic that the man we can't wrestle out of that tatty, ragged old cardie decided that my robes are so shabby they needed replacing.

Not that I'm complaining! It's grand to have something new, and not nicked from my or my father's old wardrobes and refreshed.

But that Moony decided I'm not natty enough, given that he wears his clothes to rags - well, that's a special sort of absurdity.

In any case, I've enjoyed my birthday celebration very much. Sunday with all of you, and Bea cadging extra bits of cake in between singing. It wasn't half perfect, love.

So. Do you think now that Bill's got a young lady, you and Charlie might make yours more of a regular occurrence? (I'm not pressuring! Just wondering.)

Happy birthday. Hope you got the present I left you yesterday.

I tried stopping a few times last night but it was too cold and I didn't want to lose the time to find an empty shelter. Just kept moving. I'm still a couple hours away but I wanted to be sure to send this early.

I'll be home soon, love. Never doubt it.

Allie.

I'd ask Frank this but I fear he might take it to mean that the three of us aren't fit to go off on a rescue mission.

Er.

Well, has either of you ever forgotten the other's birthday? And if so, how did you make it up to the other? Or how does one.

I've got a chance to see Harry but

And I think the kid probably needs a visit. On the other hand, it's the first time Moony and I would be celebrating his birthday as - well, as whatever we are. A couple, I suppose, though that word sounds completely inadequate. Doesn't account for Dora and Bea very well. A family, then.

I mean, obviously he'll forgive me but I'd like to do something he'd appreciate. Nothing too soppy, though. It's hard to figure out what's proportionate to the offence.

What do you think?

Hope everything arrived all right.

Have Moddey any interest in cast-off robes and the like? We were just saying a couple of nights ago that we really ought to give them where they'll be useful, but not so close to London that they might be recognised.

Frank, Alice, Molly and Arthur: Glad you could make it last night. I think we took Dora by surprise, anyway. (She's home from work but having a kip with the sprog.)

And Molly, thanks in particular for baking the cake. Big enough for leftovers; that's the best part. Having a little sliver of a slice now, in fact, while Remus is out in the shop.

Happy birthday again, Dora, and to our Hermione, I understand. Moony reminded me and we've sent something off from Laszlo's to you. I don't expect Harry will notice mind if you get a parcel addressed to him.

Any more questions from your anonymous friends?

Hermione,

Did my birthday present get through to Harry? I know it was a bit of a risk, sending something, but I figured he gets so many unsolicited gifts it might have slipped his guards' notice.

Anyway. It was just a little thing, nothing significant at all. But if it did get intercepted, I didn't want him to think I would ignore his birthday.

Even if everyone else treats it like a national holiday.
