Me? I just like to see Barty lose his temper. If I can cast doubt as to whether it's really him, as well, so much the better.
And sure, if he starts to think perhaps Bella or Malfoy or any of the others had a hand in making him out to be dead, better still.
Mostly it's just a distraction. Two days before the full moon and Remus can be - tetchy. (Especially as he's a bit worried about Dora being next on the hit list behind Barty and his mum.)
If you like to see him lose his temper then I guess you've never really seen him lose his temper. He's no Carrow, but -
You really must not know what they do to let off steam, sometimes.
Just so long as you're not expecting much to come of planting that pestilence in his ear. Group in-fighting isn't too uncommon, but Lestrange, Malfoy, Crouch...they're bonded in ways that would be difficult to untether. Guess that's just what happens when you take on whole institutions and manage to topple them together. They trust each other because they had to, back when it was just us them against reason.
The Dark Lord is the one who's shaky there. Got a whole arsenal of tricks and tools to root out the truth, but it's not enough to make him fully trust a single one of them.
Oh, I know what they get up to. But it helps to remind people that it's all right to laugh at someone like him, even if he's nothing but a monster inside a barely civilised body. Don't underestimate the power of mockery to take the core out of his wand.
As for Voldemort, well, I admit it didn't occur to me my innocent comment might worm its way into his mind, but if it makes him look at his own differently, can't see how that hurts, either.
Made him sound more nervous than I meant to, though. He gives out incremental amounts of trust. Has to, in order to make his vision come to life. But he never lets anyone see that vision. Not completely, at least.

I don't know whether to laugh or to shout at you.
I choked on my tea when I saw this. And may I say? Hot tea does not do the sinuses any favours.
