Any further word, any of you? How has the Ministry been today, Bill? Charlie, have the dragons settled down?

If something large is occupying their attention, maybe we could turn that our to advantage somehow. Could we stage another large breakout like Derby? Maybe get Davidson and Turner into position somewhere in the south?

Or ... has anyone checked the wards? Frank, fancy a sail? I'm sure we'd have known if suddenly the country became accessible to the outside but if the anti-muggle charms weren't affected then perhaps no one's noticed.

But there must be something we can do.

We've cracked it.

I've just tested a set with Davidson's help.

The buttons are all different designs, with two important things in common: They are all metal buttons with a shank style of fastener and a metal backing that fits onto the front.

I've put a notch in the metal backing on each one: When the backing is lined up with the 'T' for the top of the button, the button is set to send a message. When it's lined up with the 'B' on the bottom, it receives.

Unlike Hermione's, one doesn't trace the letters to appear round the edge of the coin. Instead, one taps the button in a pattern. Davidson and I adapted it from Morse Code so that it's not quite the same but close enough that anyone who knows Morse could adjust fairly quickly. There are sure to be quite a number of Muggles who know it.

The best part is that it doesn't require a wand. It's simply on, all the time. We'll instruct everyone to keep their buttons set in receiver mode unless they need to send a message, and to switch it back as soon as they've finished.

Davidson, Moony and I were discussing it and think that the best way to use them is sewn on to a shirt or jacket button, at the wrist, or perhaps a collar or somewhere else it'll be in contact with skin, so it'll be felt when it pulses. We can charm them so that once sewn in place, they shan't fall off (but they can be removed and sewn onto another garment if desired).

I've set the spell so that each message will be preceded by a single long, five-second pulse. It will feel like a vibration against the skin. Then the message will start. Anyone receiving it can pinch their button for another five seconds to request a repeat; it can be repeated up to three times before it expires.

Now that we know it works, I'm going to make up sets of twelve each. Each set will go to a camp, with a 'master' button that Davidson and his group will hold. They can send messages to any camp that way, but the messages in the camps will go to a limited number of people and can spread from there. Davidson also mentioned the tactical advantage of a trusted agent outside each camp and I agree, completely.

Alice, I can make a set for the Moddey Dhoo kids' parents and give you the master button for someone at the sanctuary, if you like. It's probably going to be a fair amount of work monitoring the communications; that's why Davidson volunteered one of his people with experience in Morse (or 'Maurice' as we're calling our variation). Then again, if a large number of the recipients in the camps are our kids' parents, then perhaps we don't need a separate set - only I didn't think everyone in their camp would appreciate knowing details about the children, necessarily.

I've settled in with John and Lucinda and their group, for a visit. Lucinda has had a number of meetings with Mrs Langworthy since I was here last and they've been working out other safehouses along their route. Right now, their part of the route goes from Nottingham to Peterborough and there's another effort to find rest points all the way to Norwich. John went and scouted last month and he thinks he's found a suitably abandoned stretch of village outside of Great Yarmouth. The hope is to gather people there and make a run for Amsterdam over the summer.

Our assumption is that the people Davidson's assisting can't Apparate, so the safe-houses have to be close enough together that one can get there in a night or two. That's the difficult part, as we always knew it would be. But turns out Mrs Langworthy's got a few friends who are also more sympathetic and, as she puts it, 'Are too old to care what anyone thinks.' A laudable attitude, I think, but nonetheless one that they probably ought to curb at least for the sake of appearances.

Well, anyway, they're training up some guides (Paul's one) and figuring out the best routes between one house and the next. They need links to the southern cities and camps. And of course, if we can get our little branch going, we could also send some of the refugees south, to Hastings or Eastbourne - provided we could find anything along the southern coast that's remotely uninhabited.

Kingsley, I was wondering if Benjy or Dorcas might want to help with some of that - especially acting as a guide or helping to figure out safe places to sleep during the days and whom else we could recruit. They're both gregarious enough, seems to me, they could do some good making inquiries of an innocent bent, which could help us figure out who's sympathetic and where we might look for outposts. What do you think, mate?

Not sure how long I'll stay. At least a week or so, so I'm in one place when Harry undergoes the first task. Hermione, be sure to have him ask for help if he needs it, all right?

Okay, so, all of Sherwood's been talking about it, but since we're all outlaws here no one has much in the way of details. I got elected to ask.

Have they really gone and secured the rights to play the World Cup Finals here? Where, then? (Last I'd heard it was going to be somewhere in Canada, but that was over a year ago. Things have been known to change with sufficient application of persistence. And gold.)

And is everyone in the whole realm supposed to go?

If all the camps are going down to skeleton crews, well, I mean to say, we could get dozens out, perhaps.

Of course, there are some who want to throw together some kind of plan to disrupt the match, or the celebrations around it. I have to assume MLE have thought about that, though. And possibly the camps, as well.

But surely the whole country can't simply shut down for the final, can it?
